> How many watts your appliances use, and what it takes to run them on backup power. Independent, source-linked reference: typical running watts, starting (surge) watts and daily kWh for 61 US household appliances, a generator size calculator, a power station runtime calculator, a watts/amps/volts converter, and 15 guides. Last full review 2026-10-11.

Key rules: Watts = volts x amps (US outlets 120 V; large appliances 240 V). Size a generator for the sum of running watts plus the largest single starting surge. Power station runtime (h) is roughly capacity (Wh) x 0.85 / average watts; cycling appliances like fridges average far below their running watts. A 15 A 120 V circuit carries 1,800 W (1,440 W continuous). Never run a generator indoors; never backfeed through an outlet.
