How many watts does an Instant Pot use?

A 6-quart Instant Pot is rated 1,000 watts and an 8-quart model 1,200 watts; 3-quart minis use roughly 700 W. It draws full power only while heating up, then cycles to hold pressure.

Watts by model and setting

Most instant pot models draw between 700 and 1,200 W while running; a typical one draws about 1,000 W. About 1 hour per cooking session: full power while coming up to pressure, then the heater cycles to hold pressure: 1,000 W x 1 h x 0.4 = ~0.4 kWh.

  • Size: 3, 6 and 8-quart models are rated about 700, 1,000 and 1,200 W
  • Heating to pressure is the high-draw phase; holding pressure and keep-warm average much less
  • Slow-cook and saute modes have different average draw

Running an Instant Pot on a generator or power station

  • Generator: at least 1,000 running watts. A generator rated 1,000 W or more covers it with room to spare.
  • Power station: continuous output of at least 1,000 W. Pure sine wave output is the safe choice for motors and electronics.

500 Wh1.1 h
1,000 Wh2.1 h
2,000 Wh4.2 h
3,000 Wh6.4 h

Based on 400 W average draw (running watts × duty cycle) and 85% usable capacity.

  • No starting surge; a 1,000 W model runs on a power station with about 1,200 W or more of continuous output
  • One of the most energy-efficient ways to cook a full meal on battery power
  • Keep the vent clear and the pot on a stable, heat-safe surface
  • Run a gas generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents; carbon monoxide from generators kills. Connect appliances with heavy-duty extension cords or a professionally installed transfer switch, never by backfeeding.

Questions people ask

Can a power station run an Instant Pot?

Yes. A 6-quart model needs about 1,000 W continuous, and a typical meal uses roughly 0.3-0.5 kWh.

Does an Instant Pot use a lot of electricity?

No. It heats a small sealed pot and cooks fast, so it usually uses less energy than a stovetop or oven for the same dish.
